SEAI is headquartered at Kochi and serves as the central body for seafood exporters throughout India. It is represented In the governing council of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), a statutory body set up under Ministry of Commerce for promoting exports of Indian seafood.

SEAI plays an important role in organisation of events such as India International Seafood show (IISS), one the largest seafood fairs in the world.Besides, this SEAI works closely with MPEDA and other government agencies in ensuring substantive participation of Indian seafood exporting community in international fairs relating to food and seafood.

SEAI is also involved in addressing general issues affecting the interests of the industry, including international trade disputes and regulatory matters, to safeguard the interests of its members and to establish an environment conducive to promotion of interests of the seafood exporting community.

Divided into 9 regions, with each region representing a coastal state in the country, the activities of SEAI extends from Gujarat in the east to West Bengal in the west. Each region elects its own Managing Committee besides sending representatives to the national body. National Managing Committee (NMC) of the SEAI is the key decision making body of the organisation

President of SEAI is elected by the NMC and holds office for a tenure of two years, which can be extended. As per the established convention, the post of the President rotates between the western and eastern coasts to ensure cohesion and unity but also to promote the activities of the organisation uniformly across the country.
